At LUNA, we strongly consider and evaluate the health of our land and forest inhabitants before conducting a program. If the site has become overrun or heavily impacted, we will close for a short period to allow the land to recover. All aspects of soil, water, plant and animal life are considered in this decision.

  • In 2009 we produced only 12 bags of garbage as a company, we're stiving to lower that even more for 2010
  • Our site is powered solely by solar(photovoltaic) and wind power
  • We use composting toilets
  • All water used on-site is treated rainwater
  • All food purchased for our trips is either grown at LUNA, organic, or bought locally from farmers and local grocery stores
  • Our trails are mulched using waist product from local arborists
  • All heating for the yurts is wood fire using dead wood harvested from our forests
  • All food scraps are composted for our garden use
  • A 2 acre pond was created in 2009 to improve overall biodiversity
  • A 5 acre wetland was created in 2009 to improve runoff water quality to beaver creek
  • A grass waterway was constructed in the farm fields to ease erosion and sedimentation of beaver creek
  • All buildings and infrastructure have been designed to have a very low impact on their surroundings
  • Meadows have been created to improve animal habitat
  • Nesting boxes for wood ducks, bats and owls have been installed
  • Invasive species such as Manitoba Maple and European Buckthorn are being removed
  • Old barbed and wire farm fencing has been removed to allow animals safe passage on and off the property
  • Tractors used for trail maintenance are fueled in the summer on Bio-Diesel
  • Recycled material is used whenever possible for new building construction
  • Pack it in - Pack it out policy
  • Cedars are being planted in lowland areas
  • Bur Oaks and Butternut Hickory trees have been planted
  • Limited group sizes
  • All of our gear purchased for our out-trips has been bought and made locally

Over the years, through educated choice, we've managed to lower our Ecological Footprint to 1.5.  Don't know what this means, check out our Eco-Footprint Calculator to see how you compare
